The State government has made the decision to completely exempt electric vehicles (EVs) from road taxes and registration fees in an attempt to incentivize people to convert to EVs. On Monday, the new EV policy will go into effect. According to Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar, who spoke to the media on Sunday, the new policy is anticipated to significantly accelerate Telangana’s adoption of electric vehicles, supporting the state’s larger objectives of energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. The government intends to implement infrastructure upgrades, such as additional charging stations and incentives for manufacturers, in addition to waiving the registration fee for electric vehicles, he said.
Regardless of the number of vehicles registered, electric buses purchased and registered in Telangana for the first two years, until December 31, 2026, are also completely exempt from road tax and registration fees for the duration of the EVs’ lives. However, they must be operated exclusively by the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation. Additionally exempt are buses that belong to any industry and are used solely for the transportation of its own employees, so long as they aren’t used for business.
