Amaravati : The Andhra Pradesh government has decided to challenge the Andhra Pradesh High Court’s verdict on Backward Classes (BC) reservations by approaching the Supreme Court. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has directed officials to file an appeal against the High Court’s ruling in the country’s apex court. The Chief Minister held discussions with Advocate General Dammalapati Srinivas and other senior legal experts to review the judgment and formulate the government’s legal strategy. During the meeting, the Chief Minister instructed officials to ensure that the petition is filed before the Supreme Court by next Monday. In addition to the legal challenge, Chandrababu Naidu also advised party leaders to highlight what he described as the YSR Congress Party’s (YSRCP) attempts to obstruct BC reservations. He directed them to take this message to the public while the government pursues its legal battle in the Supreme Court. The state government’s decision marks the next step in its efforts to defend the BC reservation policy following the High Court’s ruling.

The CM has ordered the appointment of senior Supreme Court lawyers to argue the government’s petition in Delhi. Chandrababu Naidu has made it clear that the government is committed to providing 34 percent reservation to BCs. Meanwhile, it is known that the High Court has struck down the GOs issued by the AP government providing 34 percent reservation to BCs in local elections. The bench has issued orders to the Election Commission and the AP government to start the local election process within 6 weeks. With this, the government has decided to fight the High Court’s verdict in the Supreme Court.
