The Government of India has accelerated the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission with its upgraded Phase 2.0, aiming to provide safe and sustainable drinking water to every rural household in Andhra Pradesh by 2028.

Under the ambitious programme, the Centre has extended the mission timeline and significantly increased funding to strengthen rural water infrastructure. The total national outlay now stands at nearly ₹8.7 lakh crore, reflecting a renewed focus on ensuring “Har Ghar Jal” (tap water for every home).

In Andhra Pradesh, the scheme is expected to cover all remaining households that still lack tap water connections. Officials said the initiative will not only provide pipelines but also focus on water purification, storage systems, and long-term sustainability of water sources.

The extension of the scheme till 2028 has come as a major relief to the state, enabling completion of pending projects and expanding coverage to lakhs of households. Reports indicate that nearly 24 lakh homes in Andhra Pradesh are expected to benefit from the extended timeline.

Beyond infrastructure, the mission is designed to improve public health, reduce water-borne diseases, and ease the burden on rural women, who traditionally spend hours fetching water. With household tap connections, families are expected to see better living standards, improved sanitation, and increased opportunities for education and employment.

However, challenges remain in execution, including funding gaps, project delays, and the need for better coordination between state and central agencies. The government has introduced stricter guidelines and monitoring systems to ensure transparency and timely completion of works.

Overall, Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 is being seen as a transformative step toward rural development, aiming to provide not just water access but a foundation for healthier and more sustainable communities across Andhra Pradesh and the country.
