Amaravati : The state government has taken another key decision with the aim of developing coastal tourism in Andhra Pradesh. It has released guidelines under the name ‘Beach Shacks’. As per G.O. No. 362 issued by the Excise Department, these shacks will be set up on selected beaches with limited regulations. This policy will be implemented in 12 coastal districts of the state and in places identified by the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC). Excise department officials said that this policy is being started as a pilot project as per the recommendations of the Cabinet Sub-Committee. A notification has been issued for the establishment of beach shacks under this policy from September 1 to August 31, 2029.

Started as a pilot project, the rules are the same: It is proposed to set up beach shacks on Suryalanka and Visakhapatnam beaches. After a year, the pilot shops will be reviewed and a decision will be taken to expand them. According to the guidelines, the excise department officials have suggested that beach shacks should operate only from 10 am to 8 pm. Strict rules will be implemented for the safety and control of tourists. There are also clear instructions to supply only low-alcohol beverages here. The excise department officials have clarified that Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) and foreign liquor will not be allowed in these shacks.

Policy based on court guidelines: Officials said that following the Supreme Court guidelines, the rules on the sale of alcohol in highway areas are also being applied to this policy. This decision was taken keeping in mind the environment, tourism development and safety issues.

Tourism development objective: The government’s goal is to provide a new attraction to coastal tourism and increase local employment opportunities through the establishment of beach shacks. These shacks will be designed with modern facilities to attract domestic and foreign tourists.
